Personal Insurance

For the family members with four legs.

Veterinary medicine can do far more than it used to, and it is priced accordingly. Pet insurance turns a hard decision into a manageable one.

Why An Independent Agent

The point is to never choose based on the invoice.

Emergency vet care in Portland can easily run into the thousands. The hardest conversation in a vet’s office is usually about money, not medicine. Pet insurance exists so the treatment decision stays a treatment decision, not a money decision.

In Detail

The parts worth understanding

Pet insurance generally works differently from health insurance: you pay the vet, then the insurer reimburses you.

Three numbers define a plan, the deductible (annual or per-condition), the reimbursement rate (commonly 70%, 80% or 90% of the covered bill), and the annual limit. A plan with a low premium usually has a high deductible, a lower reimbursement rate, a low annual cap, or all three.

This is the single most important thing to understand, and the reason timing matters so much.

No pet insurer covers pre-existing conditions. Anything diagnosed, or showing symptoms, before coverage starts and past the waiting period is excluded, often permanently.

The practical consequence: pet insurance is worth most when bought while the animal is young and healthy. Waiting until something appears is waiting until it is too late for that condition.

Questions worth asking before you compare prices:

  • Are hereditary and congenital conditions covered? Breed-specific issues matter
  • Are chronic conditions covered year after year, or capped after the first year
  • How long are the waiting periods, and are they different for orthopedic issues
  • Is the annual limit per condition or across everything
  • Does the premium rise with the pet’s age, and by how much
  • Is exam fee reimbursement included or excluded

Local Knowledge

A dog-heavy city with excellent, expensive vets.

Portland has one of the highest numbers of pets per person in the country, and it has excellent specialist and emergency vets to match. That is great news for your pet’s health. It is also why a sudden surgery or an emergency visit can hand you a bill in the thousands almost overnight.

Worth asking about. Pet coverage comes from specialist carriers, not bundled with home and auto, but we can still set it up alongside your other policies so everything sits with us in one place.

Questions

Pet insurance questions

Does pet insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

No. Anything diagnosed or symptomatic before coverage begins and past the waiting period is excluded, which is why buying while a pet is young and healthy matters.

How does pet insurance pay out?

Usually by reimbursement: you pay the vet and the insurer repays a percentage of the covered amount after your deductible.

Is routine care like vaccinations covered?

Not by a standard accident and illness plan. It is generally available as a wellness add-on, which functions more like a payment plan than insurance.

Can I use any veterinarian?

With most pet insurers yes, including specialists and emergency hospitals, because you are reimbursed rather than using a network.
