Bundling, putting your auto and home or renters policies with the same carrier, is the most widely advertised discount in insurance. It is also genuinely useful. But “bundle and save” is a slogan, not a guarantee, and the honest version has some conditions attached.

Why bundling usually does save

  • Multi-policy discounts are large. Many carriers discount both policies, and the combined saving often lands in the 15 to 20% range.
  • Customers who bundle stay longer, so carriers price to win the whole household rather than one policy.
  • One renewal date, one bill, one phone call. The administrative simplification is worth something real when you need to make a change.
  • Single-deductible provisions. Some carriers waive or reduce one deductible when a single event damages both your home and your car, a tree through the roof and onto the driveway, for example.

When bundling does not win

This is the part the advertising skips.

  • When one of your risks is priced badly by that carrier. A carrier that is excellent on auto may be uncompetitive on an older home with a wood-shake roof. A large discount on a bad base rate still loses to two good standalone rates.
  • When your driving record and your property profile pull in opposite directions. Carriers weight these differently, and sometimes splitting them genuinely wins.
  • When a specialty risk is involved. A classic car, a rental property, or a home in a high-wildfire area often belongs with a specialist carrier regardless of what happens to the rest.

How we actually check

Because we are independent, we can run both comparisons rather than assuming. When we shop a household we normally price:

  1. The best bundled option across our carriers
  2. The best standalone auto policy
  3. The best standalone home or renters policy

Then we compare the bundled total against the sum of the two best standalone quotes. Most of the time bundling wins. Sometimes it does not, and we say so.

Compare coverage, not just price

A bundle is only cheaper if the coverage is equal. Before you accept any comparison, check that the liability limits match, that both quotes use replacement cost and not actual cash value, and that the deductibles are the same. Also check that endorsements you count on, like water backup, scheduled jewelry, and glass coverage, are in both quotes.

What else to ask about

Bundling is not the only discount on the table. Depending on the carrier, it is worth asking about paid-in-full, paperless billing, automatic payment, claims-free history, home security or monitored alarms, new-roof credits, good-student discounts, and low-mileage or telematics programs.

The practical step

Send us the declarations pages for whatever you right now have. That single document contains almost everything needed to run the comparison properly, and it takes us far less time than reconstructing it from memory over the phone.
